Artifact 13:  Sign-up Computer Sheet

Context:

A computer sign-up sheet is very useful in the classroom because it allows children to plan for themselves when a good time to use the classroom computers would be.  This sign-up sheet was created using the word processing program Microsoft Word and then transferred to Netscape Composer.

Impact:

With the many demands and projects that our students are being faced with in today's education, it is essential that computers be available to them to provide internet access, word processing, etc.  The problem occurs when you do not have enough computers for every student.  Most classrooms are not equipped with enough computers for each student, so a sign-up sheet is very effective in managing students' computing needs.

Alignment:

By having a computer sign-up sheet in your room, teachers can easily look and see what students are using the computers and when.  This helps the teacher decide when some students are monopolizing the computers, and it can also help the teacher discover different trends about his or her students.  There might be a relationship with how good one student does on his papers when he has a chance to type them up instead of hand writing them.  By having a computer sign-up sheet, the teacher can monitor the use of the computers ensuring that each student has a fair and equal chance at spending some time on the computers in the classroom (Tech. Comp. VI. E.).
