Artifact 9:  Literature Database

Context:

*When viewing the database entries, you must click on "Search Database", scroll down to the bottom of the next page, and type in "Seagle" in the "Reviewer's Last Name" section.  Then click on "Start Search".

The literature database was created for teachers to be able to look up information about certain books or authors.  It was created especially for students at Appalachian State University to use and submit to.  Teachers can go to a certain web site and are able to access information relevant to what they need.

Impact:

Teachers are continually trying to find new books and materials and lesson plan ideas.  The literature database allows teachers the freedom of pulling up one site on the computer and being able to browse around for different views and factual information about books and authors.

Alignment:

The literature database is a great resource for teachers to make use of.  The database allows teachers to research any book before reading it or using it in some way in their classroom, or any author before doing a specific author study on him or her.  The literature database only contains submissions from students in the Block Experience at Appalachian State University, and can therefore be seen as a more reliable source rather than a web site off of the Internet.  Each submission has been evaluated by a college professor in the College of Education at Appalachian State University, and therefore there is a very slim chance that wrong information is on the database.  The database also includes a section entitled Instructional Ideas.  This section contains ideas for lessons that teachers could use in connection with the specific book being evaluated.  By using this web site, teachers are making sure that they are getting the latest information available about specific books and authors.  They are continuing their education and reflecting about the materials that they are using in their classrooms (Tech. Comp. V.B).
