Artifact Twelve: Lesson Plans Integrating Technology

Competency 10.4: Goals of the NC Computer Skills Curriculum

Competency 11.1:Use technology in the discipline/subject for learning and as a medium for communications.

Competency: 12.7: Select and create learning experiences that are appropriate for curriculum goals, relevant to learner, based upon principles of effective teaching and learning, incorporate the use of media and technology for teaching where appropriate, and supper learner expression in variety of media using a variety of media communication tools.

Context:
During class we got to choose a children’s software CD that we would want to use in our classroom.  I decided to pick “US Atlas” by The Software Toolworks Company.  We had a whole class period to play around with the software, and to start our lesson plans if we were ready.  I decided to do a week’s lesson plan unit on, “The 50 States”.  For the first two days I had pre-activities, on the third day the students got to use the software, and on the last two days, the students did post-activities.  For each lesson plan I listed the materials that I used for that day, the subject area, grade, class procedure, questions, and evaluation.

Impact:
By doing these five lesson plans I am now more aware of the different children’s software that is out there and that is useful for me as a teacher to help me teach my students so that they can interact with the computer.  I also now have five lesson plans that I can use in my classroom when I do begin to teach.

Alignment:
Now that I have looked at the different software and have decided on one to do for my five lesson plans, I have met Competency 10.2, 11.1, and 12.7.  Since I will be a North Carolina teacher I will need to be able to use children’s software to help my students learn about technology and about the software’s subject area.  I have also created five lesson plans that I will be able to use in the future that include hands-on activities and the use of CD software.
This artifact also aligns with INTASC Standard # 1. The teacher understands the central concepts, tools of inquiry, and structures of the discipline(s) he or she
teaches and can create learning experiences that make these aspects of subject matter meaningful for students.  Since I have already produced 5 lesson plans, I can create learning experiences that make the subject matter meaningful to the students.
