Artifact Five:  Designing an Accessible Computer Lab

Competency 12.4 “Physical settings that support active student involvement, inquiry, and collaboration.”

Context:

In class we got in a groups of three and brainstormed ideas of designing an accessible computer lab.  Then as a class we discussed our ideas and came up with a master list of an accessible computer lab.  While compiling this list our class took into consideration the needs of handicapped children and children with special needs such as hearing and speech impaired.

Impact:

Accessible means that all students can use the facilities equally.  As a teacher, I will have many children with disabilities and I want them to be able to use and enjoy the computer lab like everyone else.  I have now realized that every computer lab needs to be accessible and I now have the knowledge that I need to plan one.

Alignment:

This compiled list that my class came up with aligns with Competency 12.4.  After preparing this list with my group and my classmates I am now more knowledgeable about what I need to include in my classroom or computer lab to have equality among my students.

Designing an Accessible Computer Lab aligns with INTASC principle #5. Kids enjoy the computer lab and deserve for it to be as user friendly as possible. Designing an accessible lab allows for more productivity to occur and makes the time spent there more enjoyable. An equipped computer lab also allows for group engagements and the proper materials to provide for a professional presentation. Computer Labs with wheel chair access allow for the disabled to receive the same benefits and make their time as well more enjoyable.
