Competency 14.1:Establish classroom policies and procedures that ensure compliance with the copyright law, fair-use guidelines, security, and child protection.

Context: In class today we saw a Power Point presentation and the name of it was, “Copyright Laws and Fair Use Policy: “What You Need to Know As a Future Teacher”.The fair use policy says: You may use a portion of a copyrighted work in its original form-not changed-without the permission of the author, if it is for the following purposes: News reporting or Research and education.Then we had a discussion in class about the fair use policy and the teacher gave us examples of what would be legal to use and what is not legal to use.We also looked at a handout called, “Copyright in an Electronic Environment”.This handout tells how much information that a person can use electronically.This handout is very informative and gives exact examples of the different types of text, motion media, illustrations, music, internet, numerical data sets, multimedia presentations citations, copying and distributing limitations, alteration limitations, and permission requirements.The last handout that we got was, “Citing Electronic Resources in APA & MLA Style”.This handout just helps someone cite electronic resources in either APA or MLA style.

Impact:By seeing the Power Point presentation and looking at the two handouts I am now more knowledgeable about copyright laws.This is important because I want my students to make sure that they don’t copy published or unpublished work that they are not supposed too and to also make sure that I am correctly copying only what I am supposed to.I also am now aware of the Fair Use Policy and will make sure that my students understand it.

Alignment:Because I saw the presentation and an example of a national geographic picture I know the difference between right and wrong copyrights..I now have more knowledge and because of this knowledge I have met Competency 14.1.
