Artifact Seven: Desktop Publishing Newsletter

Competency 12.3:  “Use computers and other technologies effectively and appropriately to communicate information in a variety of formats on student learning to colleagues, parents, and others.”

Context:

I went to Microsoft Publisher and selected the Newsletter format that I wanted to use.  The newsletter is to the parents of the students in my classroom.  The title is called, “Mrs. Haulk’s Third Grade Champions.”  In my newsletter I included: classroom rules, a little about what we will be doing this year, a little about myself as a new teacher, a list of things that I need for my classroom, upcoming events, and student materials.  I also included clip art and a picture of myself that I took with a digital camera.

Impact:

Using Microsoft Publisher I now know a more efficient and easier way to make a newsletter.  This is a very creative and resourceful way to get information to parents when I began to teach.  When I began to teach, I plan to make a newsletter for the parents regularly so they can know what their child is doing in school and any other information I need to let the parents know about.  This is a very effective and creative way to communicate with other adults.

Alignment:

By creating this newsletter to the parents of my students, I have met Competency: 12.3.   I am now more knowledgeable of using computers and other technologies effectively to communicate information in a variety of formats on to student learning to colleagues, parent, and others.

I have also met INTASC Standard 10 because this artifact is a model of a newsletter that teachers can use to start relationships with parents, school collegues, and other agencies and therefore meets INTASC Standard 10.  The newsletter encourages parents' involvement in the classroom in order to support student learning. This newsletter is a great way to communicate needs and concerns with parents as well as sharing students' work and class activities with others outside of the classroom.
