Artifact Two: Modern Fashion and Invention

Context

In a media and technology class at Appalachian State University we had to create a webpage using Netscape Composer.  Netscape composer serves as an instrument for helping students create a webpage to show their work on the World Wide Web.  After choosing an object and coming up with a new way to use this object, I created a web page to demonstrate the use of the object.  I have created a link so that I can assist teachers who want to create a similar lesson.  I also created a link to a page that will help students in creating their own web pages to advertise their modern inventions.  The purpose of this activity is to give students hands on experience with working with Netscape composer, Adobe Photoshop, digital cameras, and creating web pages.  The web page serves as a model to demonstrate to students how to use a particular item to form a new invention.

Impact

I plan to do this activity in my classroom because it gets students interested by using technology.  Students will be encouraged to use their imagination when constructing a web page similar to one I have created.  Students will work in groups and discuss the items and the inventions that they are creating.  Also student will be using their language art skills by creating a newspaper advertisement for their invention and placing it on the web.  The web page can serve as a fun activity for students and an easy assessment tool for teachers to use to gain an understanding of students' computer skills.  Students can also be encouraged to create links to help others navigate around their invention page.  This meets competency 11.1 because it allows students to use technology as a means of communicating what they are learning in the classroom.  It meets competency 10.5 because it allows the teacher to test students' computer skills through the use of Netscape Navigator.

Alignment
This artifact aligns with INTASC Standards #2, and #4.

It aligns with INTASC Standard 2 because the teacher understands how children learn and develop, and can provide learning opportunities that support their intellectual, social and personal development.  While doing this project we had to come up with a "new" invention which required higher-order thinking.  This provided me with intelloectual development.  It also provided me with social and personal development because we worked as a group and brainstormed ideas together.
It also aligns with INTASC Standard 4 because the teacher understands and uses a variety of instructional strategies to encourage students' development of critical thinking, problem solving, and performance skills.  Also as teachers offer feedback on Modern Fashion and Invention activities via email, students are aware of strengths and weaknesses and can make changes and alterations before submitting final projects INTASC Standard 8
