Gradebook Spreadsheet

Context

We used the Excel program to create a spreadsheet that would calculate the grades of our students.  We listed items such as test grades, project grades, attendance, and science projects to get an average to find the student's grades.  We were able to program formulas into the sheet so that we would not have to calculate each category.  This formula will automatically figure each student's average.  We were also able to figure out a class average by inserting a formula that would figure out this average.  We then wrote a letter home to parents to inform them of their student's progress.  We cut and pasted the chart that showed the test grades.

Impact

Knowing how to use Excel will be very beneficial in our teaching careers.  We can use it in many situations including figuring our student's grades, attendance, and other personal information.  Instead of manually doing each formula, we can insert it into the program and the computer will do the math.  We will also need to know how to make a letter to parents that show their child's grades.

Alignment

This activity meets competency 11.3 because I used technology based tools that are  specific to discipline.  The spreadsheet directly applies to the grades that I will be inputting.  Also, it meets competency 12.2 because I used the computer to collect information on student learning and used the Excel program to manage and assess students.  This activity meets 12.5 because I have created an organizational strategy to chart academic progress.
