Artifact #9:
Copyright Policy Discussion and Handouts

Context

This presentation was a visual explanation about the copyright laws and how it is illegal to copy software that is protected by copyrights.  The power point presentation about copyrights clearly explained how some Internet sources are not public domains just because they are posted on the Internet.  It told what portions we can use and what we cannot use off the Internet.  A portion of a copyrighted work in its original form, not changed, without the permission of the author, is legal to use, if for news reporting or research and education.  Also, we received a handout that to us how to cite references from sources that we find on the Internet.

Impact

As teachers we may use many pieces of information that we find on the Internet.  We need to be sure that anything we use is not copyrighted and we are not breaking any laws.  Also, when we use appropriate Internet cites to find information that we can use to teach, we should properly cite them, as shown in the power point presentation.  The handout we received that told us how to properly cite our sources will be very beneficial and keep us from plagiarizing and breaking copyright laws.  We can also make sure that our students do not break copyright laws when using Internet sources.

Alignment

This activity fulfills Competency 14.1 because we viewed a power point presentation with examples of violations of copyright laws. This helped me understand copyright laws.  This competency establishes classroom policies and procedures that ensure compliance with copyright law, fair-use guidelines, security, and child protection.
