Modern Fashion and Invention

 Modern Fashion and Invention

Context: The Modern Fashion and Invention project was completed at Appalachian State University in Jeff Goodman’s technology class during the fall of 2002. Groups were given ordinary objects and asked to create something new. Each person made a set of webpages so that someone else could do the project as well. The master page is an introduction to the activity, the teacher page is for classroom teachers to follow if they choose to do this activity, the student page gives information to the student about what they need to do for the project, and the example page is a model for teachers and students.

Impact:  The Modern Fashion and Invention is a great activity for children. They have the opportunity to work with computers, use e-mail, and experiment with computer software such as Adobe Photoshop. They learn to use digital cameras and they get to be creative by inventing a new way to use an ordinary product.

Alignment:  This activity meets several of the NSTE technology competencies. The teacher page meets II D because it shows how I will manage technology resources by having children use and share computers. The student page meets II E because it shows what the students will be doing to learn.  It also fits IV C because the students will be evaluated on how they use technology to create their project appropriately. A rubric will be used to evaluate each student. It meets VI E because all children will have access to the technology resources needed to complete this project. This project also aligns with INTASC principal 4 because a variety of instructional strategies are incorporated into this project and different students will be given the opportunity to excel at different tasks. Students will be encouraged to create something new on their own. It meets INTASC principal 6 because e-mail communication will be used between the students and the teacher. Feedback will be provided to the students and students have the opportunity to ask questions of the teacher.
