Media Literacy Ethnography
Media Literacy Ethnography Context: The Media Literacy Ethnography project was completed at Appalachian State University in Jeff Goodman’s technology class during the fall of 2002. The group of interns at Bethel Elementary school teamed up to create a powerpoint presentation about their findings. We each showed a group of children a set of 5 pictures of people from different backgrounds. While doing this, we asked the kids a set of questions and asked them to tell us a little bit about each person. We recorded our findings and put them together. Impact: The Media Literacy Ethnography will help me teach media in my classroom and the impact that the media has on everyone. By doing this project, students will become media literate and aware of the media’s influences on them. Through this project, we were hoping to find out what the media's influence has been on elementary children since 9/11. This project could also be presented to other teachers and parents. Alignment: This project also meets several of the ISTE technology
competencies. It meets IV A because it shows how I can use technology to
assess students work. Students will have a link to their e-mail addresses
and I can e-mail each student about their progress on the project.
It meets IV B because the project is about collecting and communicating
data. It meets V B because as a teacher I will be using technology in the
school to support student learning. It meets V D because students will
collaborate on a PowerPoint presentation to present to a group. It meets
VI C because I can use computers and other technology (digital cameras)
to support diversity. It also meets VI D because this project is
promoting safe use of all technology resources. This project also aligns
with INTASC principal 2 because it shows how I can provide learning opportunities
to support the development of each student.
