Artifact 17:
Media
Literacy Ethnography Project
Competency 11.1: Use
technology in the discipline/subject for learning and as a medium for communications.
Competency 11.4: Use
technology to facilitate teaching strategies specific to the discipline.
Context
As a group we chose a topic
to study and research for our Ethnography Project. We wanted to know
how children perceived different ethnicities and how they felt about them.
As a group we used www.google.com
to search for pictures of Americans who were not of Caucasian descent.
We found an African American, an Asian American, Mexican American, Arab
American, and a Caucasian European. Individually we interviewed students,
showing them the pictures and asking them to tell us who they thought the
people were and where they lived. We also used a digital camera to
collect pictures from around the school portraying different ethnicities.
We then compiled our information and created a presentation using Microsoft
PowerPoint to present our findings to the class. We imported pictures
from the digital camera, used clip art and word art, as well as using pictures
from the internet. We also scanned several photos to use in the presentation.
We then presented our findings to the class in PowerPoint as a group.
Impact
Now that I have completed
this project I am very comfortable interviewing individual students as
well as using Microsoft PowerPoint to present information. I will
be able to use PowerPoint to present information to my students and/or
parents when I become a teacher.
Alignment
I have met competency 11.1
by designing a PowerPoint presentation and presenting it to the class.
Competency 11.4 was met because I used computers to search for information
and images as well as presenting material we had collected. I also
used media communications in a classroom presentation. I can now
use PowerPoint succesfully in my classroom. INTASC principle 2 was
met by understanding how children learn and develop, and providing learning
opportunities that support their intellectual, social and personal development. |
