Competency 13.3: “Use media and technology to support learning for children whose primary language is not English.” Context In the year 2000 in NC, over
44,000 students spoke little or no English. This is an astounding
statistic to me as a future teacher. I used Internet Explorer and
visited www.freetranslation.com to translate a text message. I pretended
I was a teacher who needed to send a message home to a student whose parents
did not speak English. I typed a note and translated it from English
to Spanish. I then printed it out. Then I used the same website
again to translate a website from English to Spanish. I used www.abcteach.com.
When the address is typed into the translator, the entire web page comes
up in the translated language. I also used the website www.englishlearner.com
and explored what the site had to offer. The site offers games and
things for the student who does not speak English well to help them become
more fluent in English. I also printed the front page from this website.
Impact As a teacher I will more than likely have a student or a parent who does not speak English, or does not speak English well. These websites offer me a way to communicate with parents and students who are not fluent in English. Alignment I used bi-lingual software to translate information from one language to another using www.freetranslation.com. I can now communicate with English as a second language children and parents. Therefore, I have met competency 13.3.
