Competency 14.3: Social, legal, and ethical issues related to technology use. Context In class we discussed the definition for acceptable use policy. This artifact contains a print out from Valle Crucis Elementary School and their acceptable use policy that is to be signed by students and parents to allow their children to use the school computers. It also includes a template from www.connectedteacher.com that will allow me to make my own acceptable use policy when I begin teaching. As a class we discussed Netiquette, which is “Internet Etiquette.” An example of netiquette is to not use capital letters all the time because it gives the impression that you are shouting and you should spell check your emails before you send them. We also discussed chain mail and how it is illegal. Chain mail is threatening and should not be passed on to everyone in your address book. I visited a Hoaxbusters site: http://hoaxbusters.ciac.org/ where I read several different hoaxes that are sent out in emails. I can now recognize a hoax and chain mail. I participated in a role-play activity in groups and each group had a scenario to act out. My group acted out why chain mail is illegal and tried to dissuade a fellow student from forwarding her chain mail. One group role-played the illegal copying of software. Impact As a future teacher, I will send acceptable use policies home with my students for their parents to read and sigh. I will make sure that my students do not propagate chain mail and I will ensure that my students do not copy software. Alignment I have met competency 14.3 because I participated in a role play activity and discussed what was illegal about each activity.
