Artifact 6: Greek Mythology Unit

Context: This two month unit was designed for a 6th grade Language Arts class of dyslexic students.  Many of the activities were inspired by Dr. Linda Kucan's courses RE5130 Teaching the Language Arts and RE5730 Reading and Writing for Intermediate and Advanced Learners.  As this is the third year that I have taught this unit, it has evolved over time allowing students to become absolutely immersed in Ancient Greece and the universal myths that perpetuate its lore and history.  Activities include: a profile of a God/Goddess of Mount Olympus, Journal writing, Literature Responses to the individual myths, a storytelling presentation to a primary classroom, adapted Literature Circle, guided discussions, vocabulary study (Greek roots), a formalized test, and reflection in a final portfolio.  These extensions allow the students to deepen their critical thinking skills, refine their oral expressive and writing abilities, develop comprehension strategies and gain a deep appreciation for classical literature.  Despite varying language-based disabilities, these amazing students are able to handle and retain high-level vocabulary, as well as participate in critical and analytical discussion.
