Websites For Students Whose Primary Language Is Not English

Context:

The first part of this artifact is a page printed from the web site English Learner (www.englishlearner.com).  On this site, it has different levels of activities for Preschoolers up to High School.  My printout shows a brief clip from Alice in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll.  It is designed for beginners so they can become familiar with words, so a few of the words are scrambled and the activity asks the student to find the original words.  The second part of this artifact was produced from another website.  By first opening www.altavista.com and then choosing the yellow fish icon beside the word “Translate” near the top of the page, this website was found.  This brought up a new page that allowed us to translate a paragraph into Italian, German, French, Spanish, and Portuguese.  My artifact includes a print out of a paragraph I would send home to the parents or legal guardians of my student, Mark, who has excelled in my classroom.  It is translated into Italian.  The third part of this artifact is founded the same as the second, but we translated a website instead of text.  Included is a printout of the Crayola site (www.crayola.com) into Italian. 

Impact:

With this knowledge of websites that are available to translate into a variety of languages, I now have an outlet that gives me the opportunity to speak to the children in my classroom that do not have English as their primary language.  These sites will also allow me to produce my newsletters, assignments, and other written work into different languages so the parents and legal guardians can understand them as well.  These sites will help me build a bridge between those students with English as their primary language and those whose primary language is different.

Alignment:

This artifact aligns with Competency 13.3.  These websites support learning for those students whose primary language is not English.  As a future teacher in the state of North Carolina, I now know of these websites along with several others that will help me in my diverse classroom of different primary languages.
