Artifact #8
Copyright Policy Discussion and Handout

Context:

This artifact includes several handouts with regards to Copyright Policies.  The first handout is entitled, “Copyright in an Electronic Environment.”  It states general guidelines and gives guidelines of the Fair Use Policy.  The second part of this artifact is a Power Point presentation titled, “Copyright Laws and Fair Use Policy: What You Need to Know as a Future Teacher.”  Our instructor presented this presentation to our class and we discussed it.  The third part is a handout titled, “ Citing Electronic Resources in APA and MLA Style.”  The last part of this artifact is a brief word-processed list of the types of software and our class discussion with regards to the Power Point presentation.

Impact:

As a future teacher of the state of North Carolina, I now know of the legalities of copyright and how to document different sources in my presentations and papers.  My classmates and I discussed the Fair Use Policy.  It states:
“You may use a portion of a copyrighted work in its original form-not changed-without the permission of the author, if it is for the following purposes:  News Reporting or Research and Education.”
I will be able to not commit an illegal act of copying things for my class and I fully understand the laws regarding copyrighted materials.

Alignment:

This artifact aligns with Competency 14.1.  This will allow me to ensure compliance with copyright law, fair-use guidelines, security and child protection.  With this knowledge, I will now document all my resources and give credit where credit is due.
