Modern Fashion Invention

Context:
This project was created and completed in the Media and Technology class at Appalachian State University in the Fall of 2002.  This project introduces and encourages an integration of creative thinking and technology in the classroom.  It promotes group cooperation and individual tasks.  In a small group, we invented a product from an old piece of junk. It had to have a new meaning and use.  With this invention, I created a webpage that would be applicable for classroom use.  The page includes a teacher page, example page, and student page that gives specific guidelines on how to use this activity in the classroom.

Impact:
The Modern Fashion Invention project meets numerous goals and objectives found in the NC Computer/Technology Competencies, Information Skills, and Language Arts Competencies.  This project encourages web page creation that any student or teacher can access to find a complete explanation and directions for the assignment.

Language Arts Curriculum  -  1.01, 1.04, 4.08, 4.09, 4.10, 5.01, 5.07, and 5.08
Information Skills Curriculum  -  4.09, 4.10, 5.02, 5.04, and 5.05
Computer Skills Curriculum  -  2.4 and 3.7

Alignment:
The following Technology Competencies have been met in this artifact by using computer skills to produce a final product establishing what they know (10.1). The Modern Fashion Invention provides a teacher's page on the website to aid in the activity (10.3). The project offers goals met through the NC Computer Skills Curriculum with demonstration website, student work, and other computer skills necessary to complete activity (10.4). The activity focuses on a particular grade level with appropriate documents and artifacts to support its actvities (10.6). Technology is used in this lesson for learning as a means of communication (11.1). Media and technology is used with digital cameras and Word documents to present to others (11.2). The website is an excellent source of guidance for the activity (11.4). Developing a modern fashion invention calls for critical thinking, locating information and using media to present the product (12.1). The students will use computers to collect information as well as display it (12.2 and 12.3). Students will be actively involved with intense group work and communication (12.4). The groups will need to be organized and managed appropriately to successfully complete activity (12.5). Media technologies as well as other learner supported materials are effectively used to promote great participation (12.7). As information is collected and reported on, the students will use the copyright law and fair use policy correctly as well as including any social, legal, and ethical issues related to the technology use (14.1 and 14.3).

The following INTASC Principles have been met by using a variety of instructional strategies to encourage participation in this activity including critical thinking, intense group collaboration, and final performance skills (Principle 4). The Modern Fashion Invention activity also uses a helpful website to guide the teacher in introducing and using this activity in the classroom with an example page, teacher's page, and student's page (Principle 6).
