textbook analysis

Context:
This analysis was completed under the requirements of CI 3110 at Appalachian State University.  With this project, I reviewed and evaluated two Social Studies textbooks at the 6th grade level, Living in Our World: Europe and Northern Asia (Macmillan/McGraw-Hill) and Our World's History (Harcourt Brace & Company). The analysis includes criteria on the textbooks' social issues, organization, analytical mode, skill, difficulty, and readability.  This project encourages the ability to judge Social Studies textbooks in order to focus on the students' needs and learning capacity.

Impact:
As a teacher, I will focus my attention on using effective materials in my classroom.  The most beneficial and efficient materials should be used in every classroom in all possible areas.  Knowledge on evalution of textbooks will be a beneficial tactic that will be used in great demand as an educator.

Alignment:
The textbook analysis meets the following Technology Competencies because I evaluated and selected an appropriate teaching resource and curriculum materials for a particular content area (10.6).

The INTASC Principle 7 was met due to the planning of instruction based on the knowledge of the given subject matter. Choosing the right textbook is a very difficult task. One must research each text and evaluate it based on what is best for the students.
