Media Literacy and Ethnography Project

Context

This interesting project was created in our Media and Technology class during the Fall of 2002.  My group gathered information from students at Bethel Elementary School about their attitudes towards certain ethnic groups in the United State.  We also took pictures of the students and scanned pictures that they drew of how they pictured an American.    After our research was complete we gathered our information into a power point presentation.

Impact:

The purpose of this project was to investigate how students saw different ethnic groups.  We presented the students with several different pictures of people from various ethnic groups.  Then we asked prewritten questions to try and discover students feelings.    We presented our findings in Power Point format.  I could use this project in a PTA meeting to show parents and teachers the attitudes that their children have towards people from various backgrounds and how they see Americans.

Alignment

This project aligns with competency IV-B because it shows that I can collect and analyze data, interpret results, and then communicate my finding to maximize the learning of my children.  This is a very important project because I learned a great deal about my students while learning more about myself as well.  I found that many of my students have negative feelings towards people of other races and that I need to communicate with them about this in a way that can help them with their own lives.  I was also able to use power point to show my fellow ASU classmates what I found while doing my research so that now they can watch for the same behaviors and attitudes in their own students.  This project also corresponds with the INTASC Principle 2 because it shows that I have learned a great deal about how students grow and develop as well as how they think and feel by doing this project.
