Copyright Policy Discussion and Handouts

Context:

Included in this artifact are three handouts relevant to the topic, copyright policy.  The first is a printout of the PowerPoint presentation that we viewed as a class.  While viewing, we were presented with the definition of copyright, given some examples of copyrighted material, given some preventative tips, and were presented with the Fair Use Policy which says, “You may use a portion of a copyrighted work in its original form, not changed, without the permission of the author, if it is for the following purposes:  news reporting or research and education”.  After viewing the PowerPoint presentation we discussed the copyright policy and the acceptable use policy.  The second printout included is entitled, “Copyright in and Electronic Environment”.  This was retrieved from the North Carolina Public Schools Info Web found at the web address: http://www.dpi.state.nc.us/copyright1.html.  This handout includes the Fair Use guidelines for multimedia.  The third printout contains information on how to cite electronic resources in APA and MLA styles.  This reference was retrieved from http://www.farmingdale.edu.

Impact:

As a future teacher I feel better prepared to administer the adherence to copyright laws by my students.  The handouts included provide both a resource and a teaching material for future use.  Now that I have gained sufficient knowledge about the copyright laws and tips for prevention of violations I am prepared to pass this knowledge on to my students.

Alignment:

I have met competency 14.1 by viewing a PowerPoint presentation on copyright laws and by discussing both these laws and the Fair Use policy in class.
