Rationale 11: Literature
Circles
Competency 13.2: “Use media and technology to support learning for children with special needs.” Context: I worked with on other person to create a literature circle on environmental issues. The literature circle unit contains three books on varying degrees of difficulty. Julie of the Wolves is aimed toward academically gifted youth. The other book I created a unit for was a Tarantula in my Purse. The units are word-processed and on the Appalachian State Block 436 Web page. Sections of the examples of literature circles are scanned and included electronically on the wen page. Impact: Children in today’s classroom often are at different academic levels. It is important to differentiate instruction so that all children can grow and develop intellectually. Technology Alignment: Competency 13.2 is met because all of the Literature Circle unit plans are included on the Internet. These are sources available to any teacher throughout the nation and world. When I begin teaching, I plan to access the lesson plans electronically because they are differentiated for different instructional levels. INTASC Alignment: The Literature Circle meets standard one and three
because the Literature Circle format is used to meet the central concepts
and themes of Language arts. The books are at different reading levels
but all the students engage in the same activities with real literature
books. All the readings are based around a common theme. Students
explore the texts and share their findings. Students complete a different
role each session; each child utilizes different skills and a variety of
the multiply intelligences during the unit.
