Rationale 13: Database of Software Evaluation

Competency 10.6: “Locate, evaluate, and select appropriate teaching/learning resources and curriculum materials for the content area and target audience, including computer-based products, videotapes and discs, local experts, primary documents and artifacts, texts, reference books, literature, and other print resources.
Competency 12.1: “Develop performance tasks that require students to (a) locate and analyze information as well as draw conclusions and (b) use a variety of media to communicate results clearly.”
Competency 13.1: “Use media and technology to address differences in children’s learning and performance.”

Context:  In a group of five, I evaluated software and completed a paper database of our findings. I then input my information into a Microsoft Works database. I then sorted to put the titles in alphabetical order. I added a filter for software rated greater than 3.

Impact: As a teacher, I will be required to locate, evaluate, and select software in the classroom.  It is also good to know how to use a database because it is an educated way to make decisions on what to purchase. I can also use software to address different pacing issues in the classroom.  It is good to use because children learn differently and many software integrates various ways of learning.

Technology Alignment:  Met competency 10.6 by using a database to select age and skills appropriate resources for students.  Competency 12.1was met because computer software requires students to locate and analyze information to draw conclusions. Competency 13.1 is met by addressing learner differences.  The software CDs incorporate different learning styles- visual, auditory and participatory.

INTASC Alignment:  The software evaluation meets INTASC standard nine.  The reflective professional uses criteria to determine which textbook is most appropriate for their school system.  This decision affects the learning throughout the system.
