Rationale 12: PowerPoint Presentation

Competency 11.2: “Use media and technology to present the subject so that it is comprehensible to others.”
Competency 11.4: “Use technology to facilitate teaching strategies specific to the discipline.”
Competency 12.6: “Resources available including satellite, cable, wireless, and ITFS (Instructional Television Fixed Service).”

Context: In a group with four other people, I designed a PowerPoint presentation for third graders about “What Makes Our Bodies Healthy?”  We included slides about the Food Guide Pyramid, exercise, rest and relaxation, healthy relationships and regular checkups and hygiene. This presentation included a hyperlink, a digital camera photo of the group, animation, sounds, a bibliography slide and an adherence to copyright laws slide. We then presented our PowerPoint to the rest of the class.  We took advantage of the following adaptive technologies: speakers mounted on the wall, projector, and the touch screen. I printed out a copy of the PowerPoint in handout form.

Impact: Now that I know how to use PowerPoint, I will be able to utilize the program in my classroom to convey information.  PowerPoint has many possibilities for use within the classroom because sounds, pictures, written words, and links to web pages can be incorporated into one medium.  I also will be able to use the touch screen.

Technology Alignment:  Competencies 11.2 and 11.4 were met by gathering information in a group and then using different teaching strategies to teach the subject to the class.  Competency 12.6 was met by using wireless technology in the classroom (wireless touch screen).

INTASC Alignment: The PowerPoint presentation meets INTASC standard three because the class presentation melds music, animation, imagery, print, and spoken speech.  These different mediums appeal to a variety of diverse learning styles.
