Rationale 7: Ethics Role Playing Activity

Competency 14.3: “ Demonstrate knowledge through practical application: Social, legal, and ethical issues related to technology use.”

Context: I role-played an activity in class about the topic of ethics.  My group role-played a situation in which a student found a disk containing a term paper.  The student turned in the term paper as her own.  This is both illegal and unethical.  Another group role-played a situation in which copyrighted software was illegally copied onto another computer.  This also is illegal.
I visited and printed out the front page off of the site http://hoaxbusters.ciac.org/.   Hoaxbusters is an Internet site ran by the federal government that lists hoaxes and keys to identifying hoaxes and chain letters.  For example, a chain letter usually has a hook, threat and then requests the reader do something.  A hoax often uses technical sounding language. I also included in this artifact “Valle Crucis Elementary School Policy On Acceptable Use of Computers”, a Connected Teacher website template for an acceptable use policy, and “Netiquette (Internet Etiquette)”. An Acceptable Use Policy is a contract between the student, the parent, and the school, which says that the student will abide by the rules of the computer lab.  Netiquette is the proper manners for using the Internet such as not sending forwards to everyone in your address book.

Impact: I will ensure that my students do not send chain letters or hoaxes.  I will also teach my students the rules of Netiquette.  I also will be responsible for sending home the Acceptable Use Policy with my students.  I also might have to create an Acceptable Use Policy so being able to access the template at htttp://www.connectedteacher.com/tips/aup.asp will save me time and energy.

Alignment:  The “Valle Crucis Elementary School Policy On Acceptable Use of Computers,” the Connected Teacher website template for an acceptable use policy, the printout “Netiquette (Internet Etiquette)” and the printout from hoaxbusters all align with competency 14.3.  As a future North Carolina teacher, I will teach my students about the social, legal, and ethical issues related to technology.
