Competency 14.1: Establish classroom policies and procedures that ensure compliance with copyright law, fair-use guidelines, security, and child protection.

Context: In technology class, we had a discussion on copyright policy along with seeing a PowerPoint presentation on Copyright Laws. I have included a copy of the PowerPoint.  I went to the North Carolina Public Schools Infoweb and printed out the section on “Copyright in an Electronic Environment.  This information can be found at http://www.dpi.state.nc.us/copyright1.html. The last part of the artifact was attained from http://www.farmingdale.edu/CampusPages/ComputingAndLibrary/Library/webcitright.html ; it is a sheet on how to correctly site electronic resources in APA and MLA style.

Impact: I am going to be licensed to teach grades K-6 in North Carolina and so it is imperative that I understand copyright laws and do not violate them within my classroom.  For example, I need to know that one can use information off the Internet without the creator’s permission if the federal government created it, if the copyright has expired or if the holder has abandoned the copyright.  We discussed Fair Use Policy in technology class.  Its main premise is that one may use a portion of a copyrighted work in its original form-not changed- without the permission of the author, if it is for the following purposes: news reporting and research and education.  One still must credit their sources even if using it for educational purposes (APA and MLA are two ways to do this).

Alignment:  The printouts on Copyright in an Electronic Environment, on the PowerPoint presentation, and on Citing Electronic Resources in APA and MLA Style and align with competency 14.1.  The discussion, PowerPoint presentation and research on the Internet all broadened my understanding of copyright law.
