Literature Circles

Context
This artifact links to a 5th Grade Literature Circle Unit I created during the Fall 2002 semester.  It focuses on different perspectives of WWII.  I worked with two classmates in order to create a launch activity, sample roles, and eight section plans for 4th, 5th, and 6th grade level readers.  The section that I created is the On-Grade Level Literature Circle on the books Number the Stars and The Journal of Ben Uchida.

Impact
As a classroom teacher, the curriculum is very broad and the student’s needs are very diverse.  Literature Circles provides the students with an opportunity to read on their own proficiency level, no matter if that is a on grade level, grade below, two grades below, or a grade above.  This also is a great way to integrate different subject areas, like Social Studies, into the everyday schedule.  The unit above discusses WWII, which fits into the 5th Grade Social Studies Standard Course of Study.

Alignment
This artifact aligns with INTASC Principle 1 and Principle 3 because Literature Circles provide learning opportunities for students of differing reading abilities.  They also encourage collaboration and inquiry within group and individual settings which is essential to an effective learning environment.
