A. Artifact 3
Math Strands
B. Context
This activity was developed by a group of 3 (Derek Compton, Anna Edge,
and Sarah Otvos) during Spring 2001 in the Math Methods class. It
was researched and implemented by the collaboration of this group on the
subject of Spatial Sense, Measurement, and Geometry.
C. Impact
The math strands are based on the NC Standard Course of Study for grades
K-6. The lessons will be used as a way to teach the different strands
in the classroom.
D. Alignment
In Math strands, we had to come up with both formal and informal ways
of assessing what the students would be learning in the lessons to make
sure that they were actually understanding the strand. In Math Strands
we had to do a reflection of the lesson that we taught to our group.
In the reflection we had to discuss what things went well or did not go
so well. The lesson plans that we came up with were based on our
reflections, teacher interviews, and student interactions. It will
encompass these Competencies:
E. Technology
· 10.3 - This artifact shows
that I can get resources for teaching off the web because when we did research,
it lends itself to looking up teaching resources off the web (see resources
section in Math Strands I artifact).
· 11.4 - This artifact helps
me use teaching strategies that are specifically suited to the needs of
a given subject area because the subject in question is Math (Spatial Sense,
Measurement, and Geometry). We came up with the lesson plans to accommodate
different learning ages and abilities. By using the web-based resources
we used several of the different teaching strategies that were made available
to us on the different web-pages.
F. INTASC
Standard Two:
This artifact demonstrates how children learn and develop can provide learning
opportunities that support intellectual, social, and personal development.
The Math Strands project was an individual and a group project designed
to meet the individual needs of different grade levels of teaching a math
lesson with the NC curriculum goals. It also helped me to reflect
on my teaching practices to monitor how I teach the different lessons to
different classes and students.
