Social Studies Lesson Plan

B. Context
This is a lesson plan teaching about Native Americans and related to the Literature Circles Unit Plan.  I created this lesson plan in my Social Studies Methods class during the Spring of 2001.  I integrated this lesson with our literature circles unit plan, whose subject was Native Americans.  In this lesson plan I review facts about the Native Americans and had several activities related to Art as a launch activity.

C. Impact
When in the classroom, I will use this lesson plan as a part of a launch activity  to teach children about Native Americans.  I will teach this lesson while also teaching a literature unit plan about Native Americans.  This will enable students to learn about this topic in a variety of subject areas.

D. Alignment
This Lesson Plan will be about Native Americans and can accommodate diver learners as it relates to the Literature Circles Unit Plan for reading levels.  It will encompass these Competencies:

E. Technology
· 12.6 - This artifact shows that I have thought through how to use television resources such as cable or satellite to support the curriculum because the lesson plan lends itself to watching a movie on PBS about the history of Native Americans.

F. INTASC
Standard Six:  This artifact shows the uses for knowledge of effective verbal, nonverbal, and media communication techniques to foster active inquiry, collaboration, and supportive interaction in the classroom.  This lesson plan deals with the broad subject of Native Americans.  It is a sharing of ideas with several kinds of assignments from individual, pairs, group, and class activities to promote understanding and learning.  It incorporates different assignments related to deal with different learning styles within the lesson.
Standard Seven:  This artifact helps me to plan instruction based on knowledge of subject matter, students, the community, and curriculum goals.  This artifact goes great with the cross curricular goals of media, social studies, and language arts. It can be used in conjunction with the literature circle unit adapted to fit within the social studies lesson plan while utilizing certain medias to communicate the knowledge of Native Americans to the students and encompasses the community.
Standard Nine:  This artifact helps me to be a reflective practitioner who continually evaluates the effects of his or her choices and actions on other (students, parents, and other professionals in the learning community) and who actively seeks out opportunities to grow professionally.  This artifact helps me to have the ability to learn from my students as they learn from me.  The self-reflection involved in this artifact helps me to gain a greater understanding of the students, myself, and the actual lesson being taught.  I can teach this lesson, do some self reflection/assessment, change the lesson as seems fit, and try the lesson out again depending on what I would want to do differently.
