Context

I created the Literature Circle Unit with a classmate during the Block in the spring of 2002.  We used the Internet, Netscape Composer, Adobe Photoshop, a Scanner, and other technological tools.

Impact
This unit was created specifically for a  fourth grade reading level.   The units are divided according to three different reading abilities in the classroom.  After reading a set amount of pages or chapters the child does a job on their own, the group would gather together to share what they had learned and to discuss the book in detail.  These units allow for every child to participate in the readings and the theme as a whole.  It covers many NC Standard Course of Study Goals and all of the fourth grade English Language Arts Curriculum Goals.

Alignment
This aligns with the Technology Competency Goals 10.2 , 10.3 , 12.5 , and INTASC Principles 1 , 3 , 4 , and 7 .    This literature circle unit is helpful to me as a teacher.  Not only do I need to be able to create lessons that adhere to the Standard Course of Study but also I need to provide learning opportunities to children with diverse learning abilities.  I also need to be able to create a cross curricula unit that integrates many subject areas with a variety of activities.  This unit allows for students to actively participate in their education while learning at their reading ability.  The students research, perform certain jobs, access the Internet, and work in groups with teacher monitoring but not teacher led.  This unit not only takes into account the needs of individual students but also allows the entire class to be working on a theme or unit.  This unit shows how each child has differing needs and how the teacher needs to take in account these needs.
