Artifact: Designing
an accessible computer lab
Competency 12.4 : Physical settings
that support active student involvement, inquiry, and collaboration.
Context
This document was created in a group during the Technology in the Classroom
class during the fall of 2001.
This document is a list of items I would want to include in the school
computer lab to make it accessible to all children. We came up with
lists in groups and discussed some of our ideas in class. With the
many different needs of students, we wanted the computer lab to include
everyone. We included items to help most physically impaired children.
For example, some of the things included in our list were: Braille keyboards,
large screens, voice recognition computers, magnifiers, touchable screens,
and large desk with enough space for wheel chairs.
Impact
This list is a starting point for making an accessible computer lab
for children with an assortment of needs. If given enough money to
fund the computer lab I would include these items making computers available
to all students. These items are important because in a school there
are students with many different needs. It is important for the school
to make all forms of technology available to enhance their education.
Alignment
The list of computer lab items aligns with Competency
Goal 12.4 . As a future NC public school teacher, I will have
students with special needs in my classroom. It is important that
they have the same opportunities that other children have. By incorporating
these items, children with special needs will also be able to use the computer.
