Desktop Publishing Newsletter to Parents

Competency 12.3:  Use computers and other technologies effectively and appropriately to communicate information in a variety of formats on student learning to colleagues, parents, and others.

Context

During my Foundations 3100 class, Classroom Use For Microcomputers,  I used Microsoft Publisher to produce a two page newsletter to the families of my students.  It is a welcome letter that the parents of my students will receive before school begins.  In this newsletter I have included a list of class rules and regulations, a brief introductory paragraph about myself, special events calendar, volunteer opportunities, NC Curriculum goals, and I have also used a digital camera to place a photograph of myself in the document.

Impact

It is important for teachers to interact with students and parents in order for the student to receive the best possible education.  I believe that communicating with the parents through a newsletter, it will keep the parent informed on what is taking place in their child's learning environment.

Alignment

The Desktop Publishing Newsletter aligns with Competency 12.3 – as a future NC public school teacher I now know the various ways to communicate with my students, parents, and colleagues.

The newsletter also aligns with INTASC principle 10, in which I will be able to communicate and form bonds with parents, school colleagues, and agencies within the community.  I feel that a newsletter is essential in keeping an on-going flow of communication.
