Artifact 14
Computer/Technology Skills Curriculum
AND
Document on the 8th Grade Computer Skills Test

Context
This artifact is a printout of the North Carolina computer technology skills curriculum for grades K-6.  I got this printout from the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction.  The web site for this printout is http://www.ncdpi.org.  On this web site, I clicked on curriculum and read and printed out competencies.

This artifact also includes a document on the 8th grade Computer Skills Test.  This document came from the Internet at http://www.ncpublicschools.org.  I read and then printed a copy of this document.

Impact
I am going to be licensed to teach grades K-6 in North Carolina and I will incorporate these computer skills into my classroom.  I am now aware that there are six strands in computer skills for all public school students in North Carolina:

          1.  Societal Issues
          2.  Keyboard Utilization/Word Processing/Desk Top Publishing
          3.  Database
          4.  Spreadsheet
          5.  Telecommunications
          6.  Multimedia/Presentation

Alignment
This printout of the North Carolina Computer Skills aligns with competency 10.1-as a future North Carolina public school teacher; I now know and will incorporate these skills into my classroom.

The printout on the 8th grade Tests of Computer Skills aligns with competency 10.5.  In my FDN 3100 class, we discussed that every 8th grader in North Carolina will be assessed on computer proficiency before he/she may graduate.  It is important that every student have sufficient computer skills and the 8th grade assessment is how North Carolina ensures these skills in every student.
