Artifact Fourteen: Ethics Role Playing Activity

A. This rationale is a paragraph that describes a role playing activity that we did in class on the topic of ethics, along with two handouts: “Acceptable Use Policy” and “Computer Learning Foundation.”

B. This activity took place in my Microcomputers class during my junior year at Appalachian State University. I created the summary of this discussion using Microsoft Word.

C. In class we did an ethics role-playing activity where different groups portrayed a real life situation that involved ethical issues related to the technological world. Some of the issues that we covered are: using software on more than one computer, borrowing someone else’s software and copying it onto my computer, accessing other people’s personal information, destruction of another’s property (ex. changing the name on another’s document to your own and taking credit for it), chain e-mail, and stealing credit card numbers to purchase merchandise on the Internet. Role-playing is a great way to learn about a topic. This type of activity puts you into a “real” situation, and you can learn from it easily because the roles tend to stick out in your mind. After this activity, we talked as a group about illegal copying of software.

D. This rationale meets Technology Competency VI- A because I have done various research on ethical uses of technology and used this research to participate in a role playing activity.

It also meets INTASC Principle Number Six because I have an awareness of ethical issues that involve technology, and I can communicate these issues with my students.
