Artifact Three: Software Evaluation and Software Reviews

A. This artifact consists of two items: a software evaluation of the game "Where in the U.S.A. is Carmen Sandiego?" and reviews of varying software (Where in the U.S.A. is Carmen Sandiego? and "JumpStart Kindergarten). The first item is a review of the computer game "Where in the U.S.A. is Carmen Sandiego?" that I created. It is an overview of the software and a personal opinion about whether or not to use the software in the classroom. The final item includes two different software reviews that could help determine whether or not the software should be used in the classroom.

B. During my junior year at Appalachian State University, I took an Introduction to Microcomputers course for Elementary Education majors, in which I created this artifact. I composed the first part of this artifact (the software evaluation) by reviewing the game, "Where in the U.S.A. is Carmen Sandiego?". From that point, I typed up an evaluation using Microsoft Word. I searched the WorldWide Web for the second part of this artifact. After searching through various software reviews, I chose the following two: "Where in the U.S.A. is Carmen Sandiego" and "JumpStart Kindergarten." From there I printed out the reviews so that I could include them in my portfolio.

C. I plan on using the information that I gained from this section of my portfolio in my own classroom. Not only can I use the software that I reviewed for this project, but I have now learned how to search for software and reviews on my own. This information will benefit both me and my students. It will allow my students to interact with technology and learn from it.

D. This rationale meets Technology Competencies II- B and C, and V- B because it shows research on a particular software that will be used to learn/teach technology. It also shows you various websites that offer evaluations of resources. Finally, it offers a reflection on certain software.

It also meets INTASC Principle Six because I used my knowledge of technology to gain support of software that I could use in my classroom.
