Rationale 16:  Media Ethnography

Competency 11.2:  “Use media and technology to present the subject so that it is comprehensible to others.

Competency 11.4:  “Use technology to facilitate teaching strategies specific to the discipline.

Competency 12.2:  "Use computers and other technologies effectively and appropriately to collect information on student learning using a variety of methods."

Context

During Block 436 in a group we did a project called, Media Ethnography.  This project was constructing a PowerPoint presentation showing how media is portrayed in Mabel Elementary School.  For our PowerPoint presentation we chose to look at how commercials affect students and their wants.  We focused on the shoes, book bags, lunch boxes and food the children have.  Many of the answers we found were relevant with the kinds of materials children see on television.  To make our PowerPoint we used the program Microsoft XP and opened the Power Point program.  We used a blank template to make our pages and chose to use the school colors, blue and green as our color scheme.  We took many pictures of the students at Mabel by using a digital camera and saving the pictures on a 3-½ floppy disk.  Also we used www.googleimages.com to get many of the backgrounds we used on our power point.  For a few of the pages we changed the background to a picture but faded the pictures using the duplicate of the slide and changing the contrast of the pictures.  After we were done making our power point we presented our power point to the rest of our class using the projector to show our slide show.  Making this PowerPoint required group work and cooperation by all group members.

Impact

As a future teacher I can use this to help teach my students how to make a PowerPoint presentation and model how to present meaningful information.  This also lets me know as a future teacher the effect media has on students.

Alignment

This Power Point Presentation meets the competency goal 11.2 because we as a group presented our Power Point Presentation to the rest of our classmates using the projector explaining how commercials in the media affect children.  The projector was used on the big screen to allow for our classmates to view the presentation easier.  The Power Point also meets 11.4 because we worked together as a group to present to the class and gathered information from the students to bring our ideas together and construct the Power Point Presentation.  Another competency goal to be met was 12.2 because we used the digital camera and the computer to collect and construct our information.  The digital camera was used to take pictures of the students’ shoes, book bags, lunchboxes and food.  We used the computer to help us make our power point presentation.

This presentation also meets the INTASC principle 2 because by gathering this information other teachers can see get a sense of understanding about the media’s effect on children.  The media can affect a student’s development intellectually, socially and personally.
