Rationale 15:  Grade Book Spreadsheet With 2 Charts

Competency 11.3 “Use technology-based tools that are specific to the discipline.”

Competency 12.2 “Use computers and other technologies effectively and appropriately to collect information on student learning using a variety of methods.”

Competency 12.5 “Organizational and management strategies that support active student involvement, inquiry, and collaboration.”

Context:

During class we used Microsoft Excel to make a spreadsheet to average grades.  I chose to make a spreadsheet on five students grades making up grades for three tests, a project, a paper, participation and attendance.  I set up the spreadsheet so that there was a title at the top and then typed in each row the grades from what I chose to have as graded assignments.  Once I got all my information typed into the spreadsheet I used formulas we learned in class to help me average the grades.  Once I averaged the grades I printed out a copy of my spreadsheet with the grades averaged then I printed out another copy of the spreadsheet and this one showed the formulas I used to average the grades.  The spreadsheets were printed out in landscape form to print sideways, and showed the gridlines of the spreadsheet.  Also I made two different graphs that displayed the grades of my class.  The spreadsheet was also useful because I included the spreadsheet to the clipboard and pasted it in a short letter to the principal to let him see how the grades were and also that I was very organized in figuring my students grades out.

Impact:

By making the Grade book spreadsheet I will be able to average students grades easier and in a more organized manner.  The spreadsheet will be very beneficial to me as a teacher because I will have many students grades to average and by making a spreadsheet I will be able to use the formulas I learned to help me average grades quicker and more efficient.  Also the spreadsheet for grades will help me be very organized.  The spreadsheet is a way for me to have all my grades in a orderly fashion and to find very easily and if there is any adjustments I need to make to the grades having the grades in a spreadsheet will be easy to change and correct without spending a lot of time.

Alignment:

The grade book spreadsheet I made aligned with competency goal 11.3 because I made two charts using the clipboard and pasting it into a letter to the principal informing of my grades in class.  Competency goal 12.2 was also met by making the spreadsheet because I used the computer and Microsoft Excel to make an electronic grade book for organization and easier use.  Also competency goal 12.5 was met because the spreadsheet because I had a collection of students tests, projects, papers, and participation to be used to help determine their grade and average by putting all the information I had collected into a organized spreadsheet document. Also the spreadsheet met competency goal 12.5 because the spreadsheet had the averages of all students, which gave me a chance to see each student’s progress compared with the other students from the class.  By making a spreadsheet I now know how to average grades in an organized and quick manner using technology.
