Rationale 14:  Lesson Plans Integrating Technology

Competency 10.4 “Goals of the NC Computer Skills Curriculum”

Competency 11.1 “Use technology in the discipline/subject for learning and as a medium for communications”

Competency 12.7 “Select and create learning experiences that are appropriate for curriculum goals, relevant to learners, based upon principles of effective teaching and learning, incorporate the use of media and technology for teaching where appropriate, and support learner expression in a variety of media using a variety of media communication tools”

Context:

With a classmate we made a weeks worth of lesson plans that integrated technology and social studies.  We made five lesson plans based around a software program called, US Atlas.  The software will work great with the fourth grade curriculum in Social Studies because students are learning about North Carolina and with the software the students can use the software to find out many important facts about North Carolina and also get great visuals the software offers.  As well as visuals there is good sound quality.  The students can get a chance to hear state songs from the software.  My partner and I did our lesson plans based around the software because we know in fourth grade students are learning about North Carolina’s history and we wanted to include the states that border North Carolina, so our five lesson plans are based around, North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, Tennessee and Georgia.  We used Microsoft Word to type up our lesson plans, using the six-point lesson plan guideline.  In our lesson plans we included the grade level, list of materials needed, focus and review, teacher input, guided practice, independent practice, and a closure.  Through out the lesson plan we included questions students must answer from the software provided, hands-on activities that are non-computer activities for students to work on while learning about the states.  Our lesson plans also included how the teachers will be evaluating the work students will be working on.

Impact:

By making the lesson plan we will be able to benefit from them in our classroom when we begin teaching.  Writing these lesson plans helped us prepare for the work ahead of us.  We will be writing many lesson plans when we start teaching and this helped us to get a format to go by when writing lesson plans.  The lesson plans also helped us become more familiar with how to integrate technology in our classrooms.  Software can be very helpful and useful when trying to write lesson plans.  It gives the teacher a chance to integrate technology and students the opportunity to work on computers increasing their knowledge on computers and particular subject, in our case Social Studies.  By making the lesson plans integrating technology as teachers we will be able to use different teaching methods, and students will get to learn through many different techniques not just lecture.

Alignment:

The lesson plans meets competency 10.4 because as a team my partner and I developed five lesson plans that correlated with technology and Social Studies.  The lesson plans also meet competency 10.4 because we collected a software program to base our lesson plans around and organized the information provided on the software into our lesson plans in order for the students to get information from the software we found important.  By making the lesson plans we also met competency 11.1 because the lesson plans were designed to use software to help students learn about five different states.  The students will be using the software as well as the Internet to find and collect information on the states.  This helps the students learn about the different uses of technology available to them for use.  Competency 12.7 was also met when making the lesson plans because the lesson plans have incorporated teaching technology with another subject area, such as Social Studies.  As teachers we will use the software to help students learn about different media tools they can use to collect information from.  The lesson plans have helped us be more aware of how to write a lesson plan and integrate technology with other subject areas, and how to write successful lesson plans to teach by when we start teaching.

This artifact meets INTASC principle 7 also because as I teacher I can plan my lessons on the information about Social Studies I already know.  The lesson plans integrate technology because the students use software to help them with the assignment.  The instruction I will use is based on the Social Studies curriculum and what the students need to know about their community around them.
