Rationale 10:
Television Resources

Competency 10.2 “Use school television resources that support the curriculum”

Context

During class we watched a segment of Channel One.  Channel One is a free programming that offers classroom accessibility.  The program is intended for high school audiences, and discusses what is going on in the world.  The segment we viewed was talking about the floods in Africa and how it was affecting a certain country in Africa.  Also the program discussed stress, and the affects it was having on students.  Channel One is a great example of a successful television resource for schools to use.  By searching on the Internet I found other useful television resources for schools today.  I went to www.yahoo.com and searched for educational television resources.  I found a great website that listed around ten great television resources.  These resources were listed on http://www.cps.ci.cambridge.ma.us/crls/trc/ed_tv.htm.  After finding these television resources I went to Microsoft Word and typed a list of the five most important television resources I feel I will use in my classroom.  Along with the name of the resources I typed a couple of sentences explaining what the source were about, and including the web addresses using footnotes to site the sources.  I chose PBS, NASA, Weather Classroom, Discovery, and CIC as television resources for me to use in my classroom.  Television resources I found and listed meet the NC Standard Course of Study K-12 Technology Competency Goal #3.  Competency Goal #3 says, “The learner will use a variety of technologies to access, analyze, interpret, synthesize, apply, and communicate information.”  Students will be using these television resources in the classroom to help them understand different technology resources available for them, as the television programs will do.  The programs will permit the students to view the program and analyze, interpret, synthesize and communicate what they found important from the television program.

Impact

The list of school television resources is useful for me as a future teacher because I know I will be using television resources in my classroom.  By already having a list of five quality television resources I will able to show my students valuable programs allowing them to learn successfully.
Alignment

Listing the television resources meets competency goal 10.2 because it aligns with competency goal 3 in the school curriculum.  Students are learning from the television programs and will be using what they saw to communicate to others.  I now know how to find television resources that will support the curriculum.
