Rationale 1:
Computer Curriculum /Technology Skills Test

Competency 10.1:  “Use the computer skills curriculum to identify what students should be able to do.”

Competency 10.5:  “The N.C. Skills Assessment:  Utilize available released items (knowledge and performance) as assessment for computer skills for your appropriate grade level/subject”

Context

To find out about the competencies for the K-6 grades I opened Internet explorer and typed in www.dpi.state.nc.us to access the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction and once there I clicked on curriculum on the left of the page and read about the competencies that must be met.  After reading the curricula I printed out the competencies to keep for further use.  These competencies will be met to prepare students for the 8th grade computer skills test.

Impact

As a teacher I will be licensed to teach grades K-6 in North Carolina and I will incorporate these computer skills into my classroom.  There are 6 strands that must be included in computer skills for all pubic school students in North Carolina.  The six strands are, SI = Societal Issues, KU/WP/DTP = Keyboard Utilization/Word Processing/Desk Top Publishing, DB = Database, SS = Spreadsheet, T= Telecommunications, and M/P = Multimedia/ Presentation.  I will be prepared to teach the students to understand the computer skills and be ready to pass the computer test in 8th grade.

Alignment

The North Carolina Skills printout aligns with the competency 10.1 and now in my classroom I understand as a NC public school teacher I will incorporate the skills and knowledge to my students in class.  Also the printout of the 8th grade testing aligns with 10.5 competency and every student in 8th grade must take the computer skills test and pass the test before they graduate.
