Home Page | Rationale 9: Websites
for Students Whose Primary Language is Not English
Competency 13.3 “Use media and technology to support learning for children whose primary language is not English” Context: During the year 2000 North Carolina was faced with over 44,000 students who spoke little or no English. As a future teacher I want to be able to communicate with students and parents how cannot speak English so I went to Internet Explorer and went to the website, www.freetranslator.com. At this websites I was able to translate a sentence from English to Spanish explaining to parents what their child needs to bring to class to be prepared. Also from the website I printed out a page from www.crayola.com translated in Spanish so parents could get an idea to do with their children at home and for myself to use in the classroom. I also went to www.englishlearner.com and looked over the website and printed out the homepage. The website is a resource for teacher and also for those who are learning English. Impact: As a teacher I am aware I will have students and parents who speak little or no English, and I want to be able and communicate with them. These websites are a way for me to successfully communicate with my students and their parents. Alignment: By exploring these two websites I was able to meet competency goal 13.3
because I used bilingual software called www.freetranslator.com.
As a result I know now how to communicate with ESL students and their parents.
