Morris (1993). The relationship between children's concept of word in text and phoneme awareness in learning to read: A longitudinal study. Research in the Teaching of English, Vol. 27, No. 2, p. 133-154. [This article explains why the concept of word is so important for beginning readers.]

Liberman et al. (1974). Explicit syllable and phoneme segmentation in the young child. Journal of Experimental Child Psychology, Vol 18, p. 201-212. [This artilce makes the case that young children will pick up syllables before they are able to hear individual phonemes and that phoneme awareness and segmentation is difficult for beginning readers.]
